Maritime museum

Madrisa Al Sharqiya, Gulf Street, Kuwait

About the company:

The Maritime Museum of Kuwait is entirely dedicated to maritime themes. It is an artificial maritime museum where visitors can spend time exploring Kuwait’s past. Prior to the discovery of oil deposits in 1930, Kuwait was a thriving port for trade and the epicenter of scuba diving and fishing, so you can see the rich maritime heritage of Kuwait.

The Maritime Museum opened to the public on January 10, 2010. Before that, the site of the museum was part of the Sharqiya school. The school was originally built around 1930 and was the first male school in Kuwait. Later, in 2005, the gymnasium was modified to become Kuwait’s first Maritime Museum. The museum was designed by the National Council of Culture, Arts and Letters. The museum was designed and coordinated by local architect David Al-Qattan. The main concept of the museum was to depict the loneliness of seafarers, how they felt at sea, in a desert environment, being far from family. The exposition of the Maritime Museum reflects the whole history of the coexistence of man and the water element.

The museum showcases traditional shipbuilding and navigation in Kuwait and displays large models of various traditional boats, sea tools and accessories that reflect Kuwait's maritime and trade traditions. Entrance to the museum is free
