Mara Day

Virgin MaryThe government of Latvia has assigned the Catholic holiday of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary to heaven, which takes place from 12 to 15 August in Aglona, state significance.

The new state holiday is called Mara Day.

As a world-famous holy place, the village of Aglona, near the lakes of Cirisha and Egles, annually attracts thousands of tourists and believers from all over the world. Many pilgrims make a considerable walk to Aglona to the miraculous spring, beating from the ground, near the Basilica, surrounded by monastic buildings of the XVIII century, where the main festival takes place. Divine services are broadcast on television throughout Latvia.
