Mother's Day

Description:

Mother’s Day is widely celebrated and is an official holiday in Latvia.
In many countries around the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated, however, at different times. It is celebrated in Latvia on the second Sunday of May. Unlike International Women’s Day on March 8, Mother’s Day is celebrated only for mothers and pregnant women, not all women.

The earliest celebrations of the Mother date back to the Ancient Greek Spring Festival in honor of the goddess Rei, wife of the god Kronos and mother of numerous gods and goddesses. And around 250 BC, ceremonies began in Rome glorifying another mother goddess named Cybele. These religious Roman celebrations lasted three days, from March 15 to March 18. It is also known that in England at the beginning of the XVII century celebrated the so-called "Mothering Sunday" (Mothering Sunday) - the fourth Sunday of Lent, dedicated to honoring mothers throughout the country.

Mother’s Day in Latvia is a relatively new holiday, officially recognized only since 1992, although it was celebrated as a family celebration back in the 1920s and 30s.

The question is, why in May? In nature, the awakening of spring is in full swing: young green foliage, the smell of lilac, the ringing trill of the nightingale. A time of hope, birth and love. These are the feelings that are born between the child and the mother.

On this day it is customary to give flowers to their mothers, as well as to show signs of attention and love. This holiday is especially good for those who, in the turmoil of life, forgets sometimes just to call such a close and dear person.

Mother’s Day is widely celebrated and is an official holiday in Latvia.
