Lutheran Easter
Description:
Latvia celebrates both Lutheran and Orthodox Easter. Despite the fact that this holiday is celebrated on different days for representatives of different religions, in general, it has the same traditions.
Divine services are held in churches. The previous Easter fast ends at 24.00 and at its end it is customary to eat food. Mandatory on the table are colored eggs and Easter cake.
According to one legend, the custom of dyeing eggs at Easter appeared as a result of the following incident. When Jesus was led to the crucifixion, he met a simple man who was carrying an egg for sale. Seeing the torment of Christ bearing the heavy cross, the man was imbued with pity and tried to help Christ bear his burden. He put the basket on the ground, and when he returned and picked it up, it turned out that the eggs had an unusual color. Although this man was poor, he did not sell the eggs, but kept them. So Christians began to paint eggs and call them dyes.
