Labor Day (Labor Day)

Description:

May Day race
In Latvia, it is also the Day of Convocation of the Constituent Assembly of the Satversme of the Republic of Latvia.

If you dig deeper, this day in Latvia has a couple of reasons for its celebration: so, during the life of Bishop Albert, His Holiness the Pope on this day allowed the founder of Riga to call Livonia the land of the Holy Virgin Mary. In the XV century, on May 1, military parades and shooting competitions were held in Riga - it was a kind of day of defense of the city. In the XIX century Riga was considered a resort, and on May 1, the holiday season was solemnly opened in the Vermansky Park.

Three years ago, Latvia joined the EU.

Be that as it may, for the people of May Day is formerly an official non-working day, paradoxically called Labor Day. Therefore, workaholics vacationing on this day can express their solidarity only with the spring-optimistic cry “Peace! Labor!” May!, now devoid of political context. Since there are no demonstrations of disgruntled workers in the cities for this day, there are also official Saturday workers, and members of the Daugavpili trade union Musu speks in 2007. They staged a picket against the White Swan, a “center of vice and crime” and advocated its transfer to the outskirts of the city.

In the capital of Latvia, there is a tradition to celebrate this day with a national race through the streets of Riga. Anyone can take part in the race, regardless of age and field of activity. This race gathers a large number of not only participants but also spectators.

So, citizens on this day will have their time at their own discretion. Folk festivals are not planned either. But those who really wanted to relax culturally could come to the Daugavpils Theatre, where this year the opening of the III Festival of Polish Folklore in Latgale took place.
