Bau Castle
Bauska Castle, Bauska, LV-3901
Description:
Bau Castle was built at the confluence of the rivers Memele and Musa in the 15th century for the knights of the Livonian Order, who wanted to defend their lands from regular raids by the troops of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Soon after the completion of the castle, a settlement of fishermen and artisans appeared around it, which later turned into the city of Bauska.
The castle was owned by the Livonian Order until 1561, when it passed to Wilhelm von Brandenburg. Since then, the castle has changed its owners regularly. In the early 18th century, the Bau Castle was blown up by order of Peter I, and the locals began to use stones and preserved fragments of walls for their needs.
Again, the castle began to interest only in the 20th century. In 1970, the restoration of the castle began, after which a museum was opened in the castle.
