Excursion to Cesis
Description:
The picturesque provincial town of Cesis arose under the shadow of the most powerful castle of the Livonian Order.
“I will therefore see this capital city of the ancient Livonian knighthood, famous for battles and sieges, dotted with the bones of the brave, sealed with the blood of the founder.” Vinno von Rohrbach, the first Master of the Sword Order, built Wenden.” A. A. Bestuzhev-Marlinsky, “Venden Castle”
Despite the terrible times of war, the castle retained its greatness. Going to the Master's Tower is a real ritual. Capitulum, remter, dormitory, mashikuli – how many unfamiliar and mysterious words you will learn by visiting the castle of the Livonian Order!
Next to the old castle - a new one with a high tower, on which the Latvian flag flies proudly - it comes from Cesis. The new castle - the lord's house once belonged to Karl Karlovich von Sivers - a real secret adviser and veteran of the war of 1812.
Now the city and the surrounding area are part of the Gauja National Park - there is no apple to fall from the sights!
It's not a house of legend, it's not a hill of history. The Princess House, the monument to the well, the ancient city church, the hunched lamplighter - the "eternal grandfather" of Cesis, black swans - this is not all the symbols of the city. The mysterious people of the Venda, the masters of the Livonian Order, John the Terrible, the glorious family of Sivers – all of them are inscribed in the pages of the history of the city.
You will walk through the old streets of the city, get into an ancient park with a picturesque pond and the Nut Mountain, climb with lanterns to the shrine of shrines - the Master's Tower, see a medieval prison and get acquainted with the situation of the lord's palace of the Romantic era. You will find out why the inhabitants of Cesis believe that the local church of St. John is higher than the church of St. Peter in Riga.
If you are lucky, you will see the famous black swans of May Park!
The picturesque nature around Cesis amazes even the experienced traveler. We will visit the Eagle Rocks on the Gauja River.
Since the tour lasts 8.5 hours, there is a stop in the cafe for lunch.
Transportation costs are paid separately.
