Cesi Castle

Pils laukums 9, Cesis, LV-4101

Description:

The partially destroyed castle in Cesis is one of the first medieval fortifications in Latvia built by the German Crusaders. It is the largest preserved castle of the Livonian Order. The castle was first mentioned in the Livonian Chronicle under the name Wenden and was laid under Master Vinno von Rohrbach. Initially, it was a military base, and Cesis was first mentioned separately from the castle in 1221 and only a century later was recognized as a city.

Round towers were built to the castle during the reign of Walter von Pletenberg, they served as artillery towers. This place takes us back to the distant Middle Ages, when knights bravely defended its walls.
