Lielstraupe Church

Noliktavas iela, Gauja, Cē sis, LV-4101

Description:

Lielstraupe Church was built in the 14th century on the eastern wall of Lielstraupe Castle. Initially, it was three-nave, but the church burned several times, so during the restoration work in the middle of the 18th century it was decided to make the church one-nave. It is worth noting that part of the vaulted ceilings with fragments of the painting were preserved. According to legend, during this repair, to protect the building from fire, a girl was walled in one of the walls.

Among the attractions of the church are stained glass windows, which were made based on the drawings of S. Widbergs, paintings of the 18th century and tombstones of G. von Rosen and Mazstraupe Baron K. G. Leuvenvolde.

Currently, the church is the only part of Lielstraupe Castle that is accessible to the public.
