Lielstraupe castle

Noliktavas iela, Gauja, Cē sis, LV-4101

Description:

The first mention of Lielstraupe Castle dates back to the early 14th century, when it was besieged by the Lithuanians. It is believed that the castle began to be built in the middle of the 13th century, but there is no exact data.

During its centuries-old history, the castle was completely destroyed many times, and it also suffered from fire several times. After a fire in the early 20th century, it was decided to completely rebuild the castle in the Baroque style. Also, during this reconstruction, a clock was mounted in the window of one of the towers, which beat the time every hour.

After the Second World War, the castle was initially the site of the Lielstraupe Machine Tractor Station, and since 1963 a psycho-neurological clinic has been operating in the castle. Therefore, the lock is not available for inspection.
