Edole Castle
Ē doles pils, Ē dole, Ē doles pag.,Kuldī gas novads, LV-3310
Description:
Behind the thick stone wall that surrounded the square-shaped area were residential buildings. Initially, the Edole Castle consisted of two parallel residential buildings connected by stone walls. In the middle of the southeast wall was the gate tower. A few centuries later, due to the development of military equipment, the Aedola Castle was rebuilt and turned into a strong fortress.
The castle had two floors, and loopholes were arranged in the attic to protect the castle with hand weapons. Windows and doors overlooked the courtyard. For the passage on the second floor there was an external balcony, where stairs went from the courtyard. There were cellars under the northeast building. This part of the castle covers an area of 31.5 by 34.5 meters and resembles a quadrangle in plan. The body in the plan resembles the shape of the letter P. Later, the castle lost its importance as a fortress and became the estate of the German feudal lord. In the XIX century, it belonged to a German baron, who was called “mad Behr”. The baron treated the peasants with incredible cruelty. In 1905, in fear of the revolution, the Baron left Edole and fled to Germany. Aedol peasants burned the hated castle. The building was later restored.
In the permanent exhibition of the museum of the medieval castle you can see: white, red, green halls, library, round room in the tower, children's room for games. There is also an exhibition of paintings, which is updated from time to time.
