Oscar Kalpak Bridge
Description:
One of the oldest bridges in the Latvian city of Liepaja is named after Oscar Kalpak. It was designed by the well-known French engineer Gustav Alexander Eiffel. During World War II, the bridge was heavily damaged, but remained an important strategic site, being an important part of the Libau naval port. In 2000, global restoration work began. In 2006, the Georgian tanker Anna crashed into the northern span of the bridge. As a result, all the work on the reconstruction of the Oscar Kalpak Bridge was completed only in 2009. A symphony orchestra was present at the opening ceremony. Under his accompaniment, half of the bridge solemnly connected, opening the traffic.
