Northern forts
Description:
Now the Northern Forts - a unique tourist complex, which includes museums, galleries, the remains of the fortress - all this reflects the turbulent and difficult history of these places.
The history of this place began when Alexander III in 1890 ordered the construction of a large fortress in this place to strengthen the borders of the Russian Empire. For a long time this area of Liepaja was a separate city and was called the Military Port of Emperor Alexander III. This area received its modern name North Fort or Karosta not so long ago, after Latvia became independent.
Now the architecture of the district consists of their cunning interweaving of buildings from the late Russian Empire and buildings built in the militaristic style during the USSR. Unfortunately, most of the buildings are empty and gradually eroding.
