Gutman Cave
Gutmanis Cave, Gaujas iela, Sigulda, LV-2150
Description:
Gutman Cave is the most famous, most visited, most mentioned and largest cave in Latvia.
A stream flows in the cave, which, according to legend, arose from the tears of the unfaithful wife of one of the local leaders: when the husband learned about the infidelity of his wife, he ordered her to be buried alive. The woman burst into tears during the execution of the sentence and from her tears appeared a stream, which over the years created this magnificent cave. The legend does not end there, as years later an incurable disease came to this area, which terrorized the area for a long time, until Gutman’s doctor discovered that the stream flowing from the cave has healing properties. In honor of this doctor and called the cave.
This picturesque cave has long attracted tourists. Unfortunately, many of them wanted to preserve the fact of their visit to the cave for posterity, so the walls of the cave are painted with various inscriptions, some of which date back to the 18th century.
