Sigulda Castle
Description:
Silgud Castle, along with Venden Castle, is one of the first medieval fortifications in Latvia built by the German Crusaders. From the picturesque hill on which the walls of the castle are located, there is a beautiful view of two other famous places of Silguda: Krimulda Manor and Turaida Castle.
Silgud Castle was built on the banks of the Gauja River in 1207 by order of the first Master of the Order of the Crusaders. In honor of the victory over the local resistance units, the area received a name that has survived to this day - Zegewald (translated from German - "forest of victories"), remade in the Latvian manner in Silguda.
During its history, the castle was repeatedly destroyed, so only fragments of its walls and ruins have survived to this day. There was created a park where mass festivities are held.
