Turaida Castle

Turaidas iela 10, Sigulda, LV-2150, Latvija

Description:

Turaida Castle was founded in 1214 by order of Bishop Albert. Unfortunately, the castle was completely destroyed, but now they are trying to restore its former greatness.

This castle was built on the site of a wooden castle that was founded by the Crusaders. The castle was built slowly and was completed only in the 16th century. In 1776 the castle completely burned down. In its place was built a house for the owner of this land. The history of this masterpiece of architecture does not end there. Since the late 19th century, the remains of the castle have attracted more and more tourists who enjoyed walking among its ruins. Due to the increased interest of tourists in this area, it was decided to restore the castle. In 1973, archaeological excavations were carried out, thanks to which many ancient things were found, for example, an ancient brewery, a bathhouse and many ovens. The restoration of the castle is as slow as its construction.
