Castle of the Livonian Order

Jā a iela, Ventspils, LV-3601, Latvija

Description:

The first mention of the Ventspil Castle of the Livonian Order dates back to the late 13th century, and at the moment this castle is considered one of the oldest castles in Latvia, which has hardly changed since its foundation.

The castle in its architecture is very similar to a monastery with a courtyard. Although the appearance of the castle almost did not change, but its purpose it regularly changed: the walls of the castle housed church parishes, the castle was used as a prison, it also housed military garrisons, and since 2001 the castle housed a museum.

During the restoration work in the late 20th century, many artifacts of the 15th and 17th centuries were discovered. Currently, these items are included in the permanent exhibition of the museum.
