Lutheran Church of St. John

1 Jelgava Street, LV-3001, Latvia

Description:

On Jan Street in Jelgava is the city’s first Lutheran church named after St. John. Built in 1845, it is currently closed. Previously, this place was the street of Katolu, at the end of which was the so-called "Judgment Place", where all executions were carried out.

Not far from it was an almshouse and a cemetery, which in the middle of the XIX century was built a small chapel. Within a few years it was rebuilt into a small wooden temple, which was nicknamed the “Church for the Poor.”

Until the middle of the XX century, it did not have a central bell tower, and the cross was simply put to the roof.
