The Orthodox Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God

ooh Dzirnavu 1, Jelgava, Latvia

Description:

About the creation of the Orthodox Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos in Jelgava, an interesting legend has been preserved. According to legend, the temple was built on the vow of one merchant. He traveled to Mitlava, but on his way met robbers. Fleeing from them, he hid in the local forest and prayed to the Virgin, promising to build a temple on this site in case of salvation. That's what happened. A cemetery was soon formed around a small wooden church and the temple was converted into a more spacious one.

Today, the ancient cemetery around the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin has not survived. After World War II, it was almost completely absorbed by a new industrial zone. The temple was transferred to the Jelgava Cathedral of Saints Simeon and Anna. Today the church is located in the middle of industrial development near the highway Riga – Jelgava.

The appearance of the temple is quite canonical. The main building has a cross at the base. The interior is almost completely preserved - the original iconostasis, kiotas and candle box. Despite the need for reconstruction and repair, the church is popular among the local population. It is believed that this is a very prayerful place.
