Cathedral of Santi Pietro e Stefano
Piazza Collegiata, 6500 Bellinzona, Svizzera
Description:
Opposite the castle of Castelgrande is the collegial church of Saints Peter and Stephen. In the form in which this cathedral is known now, it was built in the XV century.
However, in the XII century on the same place already stood the Church of St. Peter. And naturally, four centuries later, it needed to be rebuilt. The project was undertaken by architect Thomas Rodari, who had already built a cathedral in Como. It was he who rebuilt the Gothic monastery church.
The Church of Saints Peter and Stephen is one of the first Renaissance architectural monuments in these places. But inside the church there are old Gothic frames, richly decorated with stucco.
And already in the XVII – XVIII centuries, the vaults of the temple were decorated and painted in the Baroque style by Italian painters Pier Francesco Mazzucelli, Camillo Procagni and Bartolomeo Roverio.
