About the company:
Klaipeda Maritime Museum is the main local attraction and pride. This unique place gathered "under one roof" the museum, dolphinarium, huge aquarium and nature museum of the Curonian Spit, because it is located in the north of this wonderful place. The museum is located in the premises of the former defensive fortress of Kopgalis, built in the XIX century, and opened in 1979, although since then its exposition has undergone some changes taking into account the tastes of visitors.
Exhibits of the museum, occupying more than 2700 m2, can be found on the way to the fortress. There are a trawler and trawler bot, there are dilapidated fishing huts, in which the life of fishermen is recreated to the smallest detail. And the casemates under the mounds of the fortress, which were previously used as gunpowder repositories, adapted an exhibition telling about Lithuanian shipping and covering the period from the boot of Peter I to modern nuclear icebreakers. On the mounds there is a collection of various anchors and propellers.
However, the greatest interest among adults and young visitors to the museum is the aquarium. Various species of fish, penguins, sea lions, dolphins and seals settled in the building of the old fort and show their viewers water shows. Exotic fish and marine fauna are contained in 34 small aquariums, as well as in a pool with a diameter of 20 m. All the brightest and most unusual representatives of the seas will swim before your eyes at arm’s length.
Now it is considered one of the largest aquariums in Europe, and once it began with a small collection of sea shells collected by local sailors in different parts of the world. This collection marked the beginning of the entire museum. Now it has 3,500 shells.
