The Church of the Most Holy Mother of God

Lithuania, Trakai, Vitauto Street, 32

Description:

Orthodoxy in Lithuania appeared thanks to the Grand Duke Gedimin in the XIV century. For Christian monasteries, he chose a wonderful place - Lake District. Eight temples were located on this territory, but they gradually became extinct, and then completely disappeared. There was such a time in Lithuania that Christians gathered in crowds at their homes, arranging prayer services.

In the XIX century, the government decided to build an Orthodox monastery again. So in 1863 the Church of the Most Holy Mother of God appeared. The church was built with money donated by the Russian Orthodox Church. Two years later, the church received a precious gift from the Russian tsar. It was a gold collar with an inscription in Russian.

During the Second World War, the temple was badly damaged. Part of the facade collapsed and the church was closed. In 1938, the monastery was overhauled. It's still working.
