Mountain Three Crosses
Description:
According to legend, in 1345 or 1368, in the absence of Prince Olgerd and the Vilna voivode Gastold, who had gone to war, the pagans of Vilnius attacked the Franciscan monks, whom, at the request of the Christian wife, Gastold settled in his house. Seven of them were executed at the market, seven managed to escape. Fleeing monks “caught on the mountains on the banks of Vilenka”: four were thrown from the mountain into the river, and three were nailed to crosses and left on the mountain. In memory of the martyrdom of the Franciscans on the mountain, three crosses were first erected. This is what the legend says on the plaque at this memorial. Today, the crosses are no longer wooden, as originally, but reinforced concrete, their color is sandy white, on a sunny day they seem to glow. The view from here is very good. The only thing that darkens the impressions of this memorial is a very steep climb to the mountain.
