Cathedral Square
Katedros aikš tė, Vilnius, Lithuania
Description:
The Cathedral Square (old name: Gedimin Square) is the main square of Vilnius, located in the historical center of the city near the Cathedral of St. Stanislav. This is the central place of folk festivals, on the square are all city holidays, fairs, concerts, parades, political rallies and other mass actions.
The square was formed relatively late - in the nineteenth century. Previously, part of its territory was occupied by residential buildings and a fortress called the Lower Castle. However, after the elimination of the fortress and the demolition of superfluous buildings, the area expanded significantly.
The Cathedral Square today is the most lively place of the city and the central attraction of all tourist excursions in old Vilnius. On the square there are many historical and architectural monuments - the Cathedral with a bell tower, the Gedimin Tower, the Three Crosses mountain and the monument to the Grand Duke Gedimin. In addition, the restoration of the Palace of Rulers, destroyed in 1801, is actively underway.
The Cathedral Square is a very beautiful place. It is surrounded by ancient houses in the medieval style, it is also adjacent to many city parks and squares. This is a great place to admire the ancient architecture of the Lithuanian capital.
