Cathedral
Katedros aik&scaron tė 2-3, Vilnius 01143, Lithuania
Description:
The Cathedral (full name Cathedral of St. Stanislaw and St. Vladislav) is the largest Catholic church in Vilnius. Located in the old town, in the historical center of the Lithuanian capital.
The cathedral was built in the fifteenth century on the site of the former pagan temple. Like many buildings of the time, the temple often suffered from fires, but it was invariably restored again. In the sixteenth century, a bell tower was added to the cathedral, and in the seventeenth - a chapel.
The construction was always led by Italian masters, so the Cathedral was strongly influenced by the local architectural trends.
After the Second World War, a warehouse was organized in the building of the cathedral by the Soviet authorities, and a little later - an art gallery at the Art Museum. Only in 1989 the cathedral was returned to the church, re-consecrated and reopened to the faithful.
The cathedral has a huge cultural and historical significance. Located right in the heart of Vilnius, it has experienced all the important historical events in the life of Lithuania, so it always attracts a lot of tourists.
