Description:
Prechistensky Cathedral is located in the city of Vilnius, in the area of the Old Town on the banks of the Vilni River. This Orthodox cathedral is located next to the Catholic churches of St. Anne, St. Francis and St. Michael. The prototype for the future temple was the Sophia Cathedral in Kiev.
The temple is one of the oldest in the city. It was built in 1346 during the reign of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Olgerd. According to legend, the Grand Duke built a temple for his wife. In the middle of the XVIII century, the cathedral suffered from a fire, after which the building gradually fell into decay.
Later in the building of the cathedral there were premises for various purposes - classrooms, barracks, living quarters, warehouses. Restoration of the temple began in 1864 with funds raised throughout the Russian Empire. The last restoration of the cathedral was carried out in 1998. Currently, there is a Sunday school, concerts of sacred music are held here.
