About the company:
The Adam Mickiewicz Museum in Vilnius is a memorial museum of the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, which belongs to the Vilnius University. It is located in a building on Bernardine Street and is an architectural monument of the XVII-XVIII centuries, a typical merchant house with galleries in the courtyard. The museum is open in an apartment where the great Polish poet and patriot of Lithuania Adam Mickiewicz lived for some time.
At the beginning of the XIX century, the building belonged to the merchant Zhitsky. On the first floor in 1822 lived Adam Mickiewicz, returning from the city of Kovna. The poet finished his poem “Citizen” here, preparing it for publication. In 1906, to perpetuate this event, the Vilna Society of Friends of Science decided to establish a museum here. This idea was realized in 1911, when a member of the society and its secretary Jan Obst, a Vilna journalist and publisher, bought this house.
In the three rooms of the museum you can see the table and chair belonging to the poet and brought from Paris, the book of registration of students of the University of 1815, documents, sculptures, portraits, medals related to the personality and work of the poet. The personal belongings of the poet, letters, first editions of his books and translations of works into other languages are also exhibited. The museum consists of such expositions as “A. Mickiewicz and Lithuania”, “Filomats and A. Mickiewicz”, “Women in the life of A. Mickiewicz”. The museum itself is small, but it is good to go there in the summer day and feel the atmosphere of life in Vilnius in the XVIII-XIX centuries.
