Beirut Archaeological Park

Al Nejmeh St., Beirut, Lebanon

Description:

Beirut Archaeological Park is a beautiful park in the capital of Lebanon, which was the main center of hostilities in the country during the 1975-1990 civil war. The second name of the park is the Garden of Forgiveness. The development and planning of this unique garden was carried out by members of various religious communities in Lebanon: Orthodox, Greek Catholics, Shia Muslims and Sunni Muslims.

The Archaeological Park is located in the center of old Beirut, in western Lebanon. On all sides, it is surrounded by three cathedrals – the Catholic Church of St. Georges, the Hellas Orthodox Shrine of St. Georges, the Armenian Catholic Cathedral, and three mosques. On the territory of the archaeological park, traces of at least fifteen ancient civilizations were found - Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Persian, Abbasid, Mamluk, Ottoman, French colonial and Lebanese.

In the center of the Garden of Forgiveness is the ancient temple of Our Lady of Light, which in 2005 was reconstructed as a small chapel of the Virgin Mary. An olive tree was planted in 2005 by three women who lost loved ones in New York City on September 11.
