Sursok Museum

Lebanon, Beirut, Ashrafia region

About the company:

Sursok Museum is a private museum located in the heart of Beirut, in an area where a considerable number of villas of the Lebanese nobility of the XVIII and XIX centuries have been preserved. The museum building, which belonged to the noble family Sursok, was built in 1912.

It is a beautiful white stone structure in the Venetian style, with a magnificent staircase and rich exterior decor, in which the influence of the Ottoman period is felt. The interiors of the palace are decorated in the Eastern Baroque style.

In 1950, the owner of the building, the Lebanese scientist Nicolas Ibrahim Sursok, handed it over to the state on the condition that the museum be founded here. In 1961, the first exhibition was held here. The museum now houses more than five thousand exhibits, including many artifacts of Lebanese culture and paintings by contemporary artists.

The museum is open to visitors daily from ten in the morning to one in the afternoon. In 2012, a large-scale reconstruction of the museum was carried out.
