Beirut International Airport Rafik Hariri
Description:
Beirut Rafik Hariri International Airport is the main airport of Lebanese airlines Middle East Airlines and Trans Mediterranean Airways. It is named after a Lebanese politician who died in a terrorist attack. It is located 9 km from the city.
The airport was opened in 1954, and repeatedly suffered damage from explosions and shelling. As a result of the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War, almost all airlines left the airport. In 2006, all three runways were damaged during the Second Lebanon War.
In 1994-98, the airport underwent a total reconstruction, and despite recent damage, it continues to operate successfully and is the only civilian airport in the country.
