Church of John the Baptist

St John-Marc, Byblos, Lebanon

Description:

The Church of John the Baptist is a medieval church in the small town of Byblos, which is today known as the Cathedral of Saints John and Mark. The construction of the ancient shrine lasted about a hundred years - from 1115 to the beginning of the XIII century. It was built on the site of a destroyed Byzantine temple, the foundation, column and mosaic floor of which have survived to this day.

The Church of John the Baptist is located near the wax museum, in the historical center of Byblos, in western Lebanon. This is an ancient Christian shrine, which is built in the Roman style with elements of Eastern Byzantine and Early Gothic style. Its original detail is an open type baptistery with a wide dome in the Italian style.

Over the centuries, the church of John the Baptist was repeatedly destroyed, but each time the church was renewed. Thus, its northern doors were decorated in the traditional Arabic style in the XVIII century and during the next reconstruction the bell tower was added.
