Baatara - The Abyss of Three Bridges
Baatara gorge waterfall, Lebanon
Description:
In the middle of the last century, a waterfall was discovered in Lebanon, which due to its sinister and characteristic appearance was called the “Throat of Baatara”. The peculiarity of this waterfall is that its water flow falls from a height of 250 meters into a huge limestone cave, which in turn was called the “Three Bridges Abyss”. The name comes from the fact that water flows through three natural bridges that hang over each other.
These bridges are about 160 million years old, which is impressive. The water washed and polished them for thousands of years, forming the “Throat of Baatra”. The process is still ongoing: Some sections of bridges collapse, others form every day. For a long time, scientists could not determine the direction of the water after the fall, but experimentally managed to find out that the water comes to the surface near a nearby village.
However, to still look for the waterfall, not knowing its exact location, is very dangerous: from afar, the abyss is simply not visible, so tourists have a considerable chance to break off the cliff down. Recently, this place wanted to equip for a visit, but on common thinking still decided not to disturb the beauty of this place with modern designs.
