St. Michael's Church

12 Rue Sigefroi, Luxembourg

Description:

The Church of St. Michael is a Catholic cathedral located in the south of Luxembourg, on the busy street Fish Market.

The building is considered an ancient and religious shrine of the city and combines two famous architectural styles - Baroque and Romanesque style. Back in 987, Count Siegfried expressed a desire to build a palace chapel, which was repeatedly destroyed in subsequent centuries, restored and rebuilt. The church took its final form under Louis XIV in 1688 – this is evidenced by several lines on the facade of the building.

During the French Revolution, the cathedral was the only intact building in Luxembourg. In 2003-2004, the church was last renovated, and only the portal was preserved from the original chapel.
