Rue du Chateau 25, L-7463 Mersch, Luxembourg

Description:

Pettingen Castle is a beautiful ruin of a once powerful building built in the tenth century. The castle is famous for its moats, which are best preserved compared to all other buildings of this kind in Luxembourg. The building has a square structure of 30 by 30 meters and was previously surrounded by a wide 15-meter moat.

Pettingen Castle is located in the canton of Mersch the Great, Duchy of Luxembourg. In the east is the main entrance to which the bridge leads. In the west, another gate was added. Over the years of its existence, the castle has undergone much: fires, destruction, restructuring, in the early twentieth century it was even used as a quarry. It was destroyed in the XV century, but rebuilt at the beginning of the next century. Four corner towers were added in 1571. Since 1947, the castle has been the state property of Luxembourg. Nowadays, Pettingen Castle attracts many tourists, because it is a wonderful example of a well-preserved medieval structure.
