Day of the Republic of Madagascar
Description:
From 1960 to May 1972, the Social Democratic Party was in power. The leader of the party, F. Tsiranana, was the head of state and government. The Cirana government pursued a neo-colonialist course, focusing only on Western countries and giving to foreign capital all important sectors of the economy of Madagascar.
This policy caused popular discontent, which escalated into mass protests in May 1972. As a result, Tsiranana was forced to give power to the military-civil government of General G. Ramanantsua.
From February to June 1975, the military directory exercised full power in the country. In the same year, on December 21, the referendum approved the Charter of the Malagasy Socialist Revolution and the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Madagascar.
