St. Clement's Church

bull. Vodjanska, Skopje, Macedonia

Description:

The Church of St. Clement of the XIII century, built in the old part of Ohrid, is one of the main attractions of the country.

The temple was built by a relative of Emperor Andronikas II Palaeologas, as evidenced by the inscription on the western entrance to the church. It is also known from the inscription that the church was dedicated to the Holy Mother.

During the Ottoman period, the church was converted into a mosque, causing a large number of valuable relics to be lost. It used to house large collections of books, icons and other antique items. The church library even has rare manuscripts of papyrus dating from the VI-VII centuries, as well as notes of Byzantine church songs.

According to legend, a garden was laid around the church, completely destroyed in the XIX century.
