Saat Kula Clock Tower

Skopje 1000, Republic of Macedonia

Description:

Saat Kula in Skopje is the oldest clock tower in Macedonia and Turkey. This curious architectural structure was erected in the 16th century. The battle of the tower’s clock, which spread for miles around, heralded the beginning of daily prayers.

The clock mechanism of Saat Kula was brought from Siget. The tower is made in a unique style for that time: the building has a hexagonal foundation and a roof characteristic of Russian medieval architecture. The building was severely damaged by fires and an earthquake. The new clock, installed after the restoration, was brought from Switzerland in the early 20th century.

Today, Saat Kula is a significant element of the landscape and architecture of the city, as well as a valuable historical monument. The easily recognizable contours of the tower are a landmark for guests and residents of Skopje.
