Canyon "Mother"

Macedonia, 15 kilometers southwest of Skopje

Description:

Matka Canyon is located in Macedonia, 15 kilometers from the city of Skopje. This picturesque canyon was created by the Treska River, which made its way through the mountain range. In 1938, the Trescu River was blocked by a dam, which formed an amazingly beautiful lake with water of turquoise color.

Near the lake you can see the Church of St. Andrew, built in the XIV century. The church is all that remains of the monastery. Near it are the pier, restaurant and cafe.

In the canyon there are ten caves, the length of which is from 20 to 200 meters. The most famous of them is the cave Vrelo. Its total length is 176 meters, in it you can see two halls. It also contains a huge stalagmite about three meters high and two lakes, the depth of one of them, presumably, can reach 500 meters.
