Chongoni Rocks and Art Center

Dedza District, Central Region, Malawi

Description:

Chongoni Rocks is an area near the city of Dedza, with a rich heritage of rock art in all of Africa, the history of which goes back to the late Stone Age. The Chongoni Rocks are directly connected to the local Dedza Potteri Lodge Art Center, which provides accommodation for travelers and guides to tour these places.

Chongoni Rocks is located near the city of Dedza and 80 kilometers from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. The 126-square-kilometer Chongoni rock painting illustrates the development of culture and traditions of the tribes inhabiting Malawi over the millennia, especially the Heva people. On the granite rocks you can see abstract geometric figures, animal drawings, parallel lines and circles. The Chongoni rocks are still used in some secret rituals of the Hewa tribe, the details of which are not disclosed by the people. The art center of Dedza Potteri Lodge remains influenced by the art of Chongoni, the style of folk masters of ceramics and drawings on their products, in many ways resemble the motifs of ancient rock painting.
