Fomm ir-Rich Bay

Fomm Ir-Rih Bay, Rabat, Malta

Description:

Fomm Ir-Rich is a well-protected bay with a steep shore and a small pebble beach, one of the most beautiful places on the island of Malta.

The name of the bay is translated from Maltese as “the mouth of the wind”. This poetic name is not accidental - despite the fact that from the east the bay is well protected by steep cliffs, the northern wind here sometimes rises serious, and the sea becomes dangerous. And yet, Fomm ir-Rich is hospitable and friendly to guests - during the bathing season, the water here is clear and clean, and the stones on the beach are so heated in the hot Maltese sun that no wind is terrible. No wonder this beach is so loved by fans of snorkeling and diving.

But to go here is primarily not for sea bathing or sunbathing (in Malta there are much more affordable beaches), but for a fantastic panoramic view of the sea and cliffs. Here, on Thomas Ir-Rich, originates the most significant geological fault in Malta – the so-called “Great Rift”, along which, during the British rule, fortifications were built, named in honor of the Queen “Victoria Lines”. They were later abandoned, but the remains of the fortifications can still be seen near Thomas Ir-Rich.

Sea fishing here is beautiful, but it is worth remembering that Fomm Ir-Rich is the habitat of a very rare endemic species of Maltese freshwater crabs, which are protected by local law.
