Church at the Bridge

Rotunda Square, Mosta, Malta

Description:

Built in 1860, the Church of St. Mary, also known as the Dome of the Bridge, is the main attraction of the city of Bridge, located in the central part of the island of Malta. Many people call Malta the “Island of God’s Providence.”

The temple was built by ordinary parishioners in their spare time for 38 years - from 1833 to 1871. The bright interior decoration and round forms of the church leave an unforgettable impression.

The majestic dome of the church is the fourth largest in the world and is known for an episode during World War II: in 1942, during a service, a bomb pierced the dome fell and rolled across the church floor, but never exploded. Today, the bomb is on display in a museum adjacent to the church.

The main religious event celebrated here is the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, which is held in front of the church building and proclaimed the Day of joy, fun and general well-being.
