The ancient fortress of Birgu Vittoriozo

Vittoriosa, Malta

Description:

The ancient fortress town of Birgu Vittorioso is a strategic fortress on the island. Knights of the Order of St. John arrived here in 1530 and settled here on a peninsula, in a convenient harbor. Previously, the place was called Borgo del Castello, hence the name - Birgu, but after the victory over the Turks it received a new name - Vittorioza, which means "Winner".

About the sad fate of the knightly times in Vittorioz you will be told the old narrow streets, where the houses preserved traces of the knightly coats of arms, shot down at the behest of Napoleon.

An important architectural heritage has been preserved here. You will see older than in Valletta, knightly residences, palaces and temples.

Particularly noteworthy here are the Church of St. Lorenzo, designed by the most outstanding Maltese Baroque architect Lorenzo Gafa, as well as the Inquisition Palace, built in the XII century, which now houses the Ethnological Museum, Fort St. Angelo and the Maritime Museum.
