Mdina

The main gate of Mdina

Malta, Mdina, Triq Inguanez

Description:

The main gate of Mdina serves as the main entrance to the city. They were built in 1724 and replaced the ancient gate structure with a drawbridge. The gate is decorated with two coats of arms, the first belongs to the Grand Master Antonio Manuel de Vilena, who initiated their construction, and the second is the aristocratic coat of arms of Antonio Inguanez, whose palace is still in the city.

On the inside of the gate there are statues of the main Maltese saints: the first bishop Publius, the Apostle Paul and St. Agatha. In addition to the main gate in the city wall, there is also a Greek gate, which is inferior in size to the main one.
