Filfla Island
Description:
Filfla Island belongs to the state of Malta and is located five kilometers south of the main island. Filfla has an area of six hectares and is uninhabited. It is a limestone rock with a flat top. In the island cave in the middle of the XIV century, a chapel was erected, which lasted half a millennium and was destroyed by an earthquake.
Currently, the island and the surrounding part of the sea are declared a protected area. This was done in 1980 with the aim of preserving several bird populations. Fishing a mile around the island is illegal.
