St Paul's Islands

Malta, Mediterranean Sea

Description:

The islands of St. Paul, also called Selmunette, are two flat islands that are connected by a narrow isthmus. They are located in St. Paul's Bay and belong to the State of Malta. The islands are uninhabited, as the last resident – a local farmer – left them decades ago.

The islands cover an area of 100 square meters, on the largest of them stands a statue of the apostle, after whom they are named.

The story of St. Paul and these islands is described in the New Testament in Acts. In the year 60, after the birth of Christ, the Apostle Paul was sent to Rome to Caesar for a judgment. The apostle, under guard, was put on a ship, which was caught in a severe storm and, after long wanderings, washed down to the island of Melith, which is now considered the islands of St. Paul.
