The parish church of the Virgin of the Star of the Seas

The parish church "Mother of God, Stars of the Seas" is a Roman Catholic church, the main among all the churches of Sliema and Gzira. Its construction began in 1853 and was completed in 1878. At Christmas, the church was given parish rank. All these years, parishioners decorated their church with picturesque canvases. A statue of the Virgin, the Star of the Seas was brought to Sliema from Paris in 1891. On the third Sunday of August, the day of the religious festival in honor of the patroness of the church, the procession carries a statue through the streets of the city. During the Second World War, the church was badly damaged by bombing, but parishioners rebuilt and restored it on their own.
