Shinghetti Cathedral Mosque

Africa, Mauritania, Adrar region, Shinghetti

Description:

Shinghetti Cathedral Mosque is one of the oldest centers of worship created by the founders of the city of Shingetti in Mauritania in the XIII-XIV century.

The minaret of this ancient structure is the second oldest minarets in constant use throughout the Muslim world. The structure of the mosque includes a prayer room with double niches and four aisles, a symbolic door and an open courtyard.

Among the most distinctive features of the building are a stonework of split limestone and a square minaret tower. Initially, the mosque was built as a distinctive feature and "business card" of the founders of the city. It is the national emblem of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

The reconstruction of the mosque took place in 1970 thanks to UNESCO’s efforts, but it, like the city, continues to be threatened by intense desertification.
