Municipal Market

Avenida 25 de Setembro, Maputo, Mozambique

Description:

The Municipal Market, or Central Market, is located in the lower part of the city of Maputo, in Mozambique. The market was designed by Carlos Augusto José Mendes, between 1901 and 1903, to replace the old wooden market that had previously stood on the site.

The Market Building is one of the oldest buildings in Maputo. Some time ago, the building was damaged by a fire that destroyed several of its elements. At the end of the twentieth century, the market was restored, and now it is an important element of colonial architecture in Mozambique.

The market was built in the form of "U", in the neoclassical style of Anglo-Saxon architecture. The roof is made of iron and is typical of many commercial homes in the same area. The building is considered a copy of Astaire Hall - a structure in the German city of Hamburg.

The municipal market is a favorite market for tourists, where, as in any other, you can buy everything - from products to various crafts and souvenirs. In the back of the market, you can find handmade paintings and souvenirs, amulets, furniture, spices, sorcerer's vial, broomsticks and even live birds. The choice of vegetables and fruits is huge, the prices are quite low and you can try everything.
