Maputo

The railway station

Description:

The railway station is the most famous landmark of the city of Maputo. The station was designed and built in 1910 by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, who designed the famous buildings - the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty. In 1997, the station was renovated and now looks more like a palace: columns, arches and a giant copper dome with polished wooden and marble decorations.

During the day, the station building functions as a regular station, which sells tickets for trains in Mozambique and long-distance trains to neighboring countries. Also here you can see many tourists who came to admire the architecture of the building and ride on the old steam train. The station building has a colorfully decorated bar where you can spend time waiting for the train or after visiting the station. In the evening, a club opens in the station building with live music and wild dances near the railway tracks.
