Etosha National Park

Etosha, Ombica, Namibia

Description:

In the north of Namibia is a large nature reserve - Etosha. It is one of the largest national parks in the country, with an area of 22,275 square kilometers. It lies on the northwestern edge of the Kalahari Desert. On its territory there are reservoirs, to which animals constantly come for a watering hole. You don’t have to go hiking on the savannah to see the locals. It is enough just to sit in a convenient place near the reservoir and wait a little. Pretty soon, your patience will be rewarded, and elephants or lions, and perhaps giraffes will come to the watering hole.

The reserve was formed at the beginning of the last century, initially its area was 100 thousand square kilometers, but unfortunately it was very reduced. Presumably, the name of the park "Etosha" came from a similar word in the local dialect, meaning "Big White Place". Previously, there was a large lake here, which has long since dried up and exposed the bottom, covered with white slate. The park is located around the Etosha Pen tectonic depression.

The Etosha reserve is home to about 114 species of animals, many of which are rare or endangered. There are about 340 species of birds and 110 species of reptiles.
